First Generation

1. August Julius Knitter was born¹ on 7 Apr 1850 in Konitz, West Prussia, Germany. He died² on 12 Feb 1920 in Michigan City, Indiana. The cause of death was double neumonia following influenza.. He was buried in Salem United Church of Christ Cemetery, Porter County, IN.

August immigrated to this country in 1881 from Germany. He departed Bremen, Germany July 29, 1881 with his nine year old daughter Emma on the ship Leipzig and arrived at Baltimore Maryland on 4 August. In 1890-1894 he lived in Michigan City, Indiana and worked as a section hand for the Pennsylvania Railroad. Later he moved to Wanatah, Indiana (Cass Township, Laporte Co.). His last residence was 219 Holliday Street, Michigan City where his occupation was day laborer at the Pullman Car Company. He was a member of the St. John's church and belonged to the North American Union.

August married Lisette Auguste Utke [image] "Lizzie" about 1870. Lisette was born¹ in Dec 1848 in Germany. She was buried in Salem United Church of Christ Cemetery, Porter County, IN.

Lizzie had a total of 12 children, of which 7 were surviving in 1900. She emigrated from West Prussia in 1882 and probably arrived the US on August 15 with two children (6 year old Albert and 3 1/2 year old August).

Maria married¹ Ralph Ortiz on 29 May 1949 in Michigan City, IN. Ralph was born on 4 Jul 1891. He died² in 1967 in Michigan City, La Porte, Indiana. He was buried in Salem United Church of Christ Cemetery, Porter County, IN.
